Getting Started
Mapystik is organized around one main idea: save places first, then decide how you want to use them. Browse them in List view, arrange them into trips in Planner view, or inspect time-based plans in Calendar view.
Basic workflow
- Create or log in to your account.
- Add places from search, GPS, imports, or backup import.
- Organize places with categories, tags, status, notes, and ratings.
- Create a trip in Planner view and add places from your list.
- Share the trip or export it when it is ready.
List View
List view is your main library of saved places. It is best for collecting, cleaning, filtering, categorizing, and editing places before you start planning.
Add a place
- Use the search bar to search Google Maps and add a found place.
- Use the GPS button to add a place manually by latitude and longitude.
- Use Import to bring places from supported external files or text lists.
Filter your list
- Status: switch between All, To Visit, and Visited.
- Search: type in the list filter to narrow visible places.
- Tags: choose tag filters and switch between OR and AND logic.
- Categories: expand, collapse, hide, or manage categories from the sidebar.
Edit place details
Open a place to edit its name, notes, rating, category, status, tags, and trip membership. You can also open the original place in Google Maps when a Google Maps link is available.
Bulk actions
Use selection mode to select multiple visible places. You can move selected places into a category, add them to a trip, delete them, or share them.
Planner View
Planner view is where saved places become an itinerary. You can create trips, set dates, add places, organize days, add notes, add travel bookings, and export the plan.
Create or select a trip
- Open Planner view from the top navigation.
- Use the trip selector to choose an existing trip.
- Use the plus button to create a new trip.
- Set a trip name and optional start and end dates.
Add places to a trip
- Click Add Places from an empty trip or day.
- Use bulk selection in List view and choose Add to Trip.
- Open an individual place and toggle its trip membership.
Organize the itinerary
Drag or reorder trip items to shape the plan. For dated trips, place items inside the correct day. Planner can show trip summary information and route-related context so you can see whether a day is realistic.
Add notes and bookings
Use notes for reminders, confirmations, meetings, or free-time blocks. Use travel bookings for flights, trains, buses, ferries, rental cars, or other travel segments with times, route details, references, and notes.
Optimize and export
The Optimize Day tool can reorder stops between the first and last place to create a shorter estimated route. The PDF export creates a shareable trip document from the active trip.
Calendar View
Calendar view helps you see trip and date-based activity over time. It is useful when a trip has start and end dates, or when you want a broader planning overview.
Choose a calendar mode
- Day: focus on one date and its planned items.
- Week: scan a short travel window.
- Month: see the broader month and where trip days land.
- Year: review long-term travel timing.
Navigate time
Use previous, next, and Today controls to move around the calendar. Use the trip filter to show all trips or focus only on selected trips.
Open details from the calendar
Calendar items can link back to the relevant place or trip context. Use this when you spot a date that needs cleanup or when you want to jump into the source details.
Sharing and Collaboration
Mapystik lets you share places, selected groups of places, categories, and trips with another Mapystik user by email. The recipient receives an in-app notification and can accept or reject the invite.
What can be shared
- Single place: share one saved place.
- Selected places: use bulk selection, then share the selected group.
- Category: share a category and the places inside it.
- Trip: share an active trip from Planner view.
Copy mode vs collaboration mode
- Copy: the recipient imports their own copy. Later edits by the sender do not automatically update the recipient copy.
- Collaborate: shared content can stay connected so collaborators can work from shared live data where supported.
How to send a share invite
- Open the item, selected places, category, or trip you want to share.
- Click Share.
- Enter the recipient email address.
- Choose Copy or Collaborate.
- Send the invitation.
How accepting works
The recipient opens Notifications, reviews the invite, and chooses whether to accept or reject it. Pending trip invites are available for a limited time, currently 14 days.
Import, Export, and Backup
Import and export tools help move data into and out of Mapystik.
Import options
- Google Maps text search: paste place names and let Mapystik search for matching Google Maps results.
- Google Takeout-style files: import supported exported place data.
- Mapstr files: import supported Mapstr list data.
- Mapystik backup: restore places, categories, tags, and trips from a Mapystik JSON backup.
Export options
- Backup export: choose categories and trips, then download a JSON backup.
- Trip PDF: export the active trip from Planner view as a PDF.
- Admin CSV: administrators can export a user list from the admin panel.
Best practices
- Review imported places before relying on them.
- Keep backup files somewhere secure.
- Create a backup before large cleanup or import sessions.
Account, Profile, and Notifications
Your profile stores your name, email, optional avatar, and account settings. Click your user area in the app to open profile controls.
Profile features
- Update first and last name.
- Upload or replace an avatar image.
- Change your password after entering your current password.
- Review sharing-related account information where available.
Notifications
Notifications show share invites, accepted shares, and administrator broadcasts. Use the bell icon to open the notification panel, open invites, and mark items as read.
Admin tools
Administrators can manage users, suspend accounts, assign admin rights, reset passwords, export user lists, disable registration, send broadcasts, and delete user data when needed.
Troubleshooting
I cannot log in
Check that your email and password are correct. If the app says there are too many attempts, wait and try again later. If your account was suspended or deleted, contact the administrator.
Map or search does not load
Check your internet connection and reload the page. Google Maps features require network access and a working Google Maps API configuration.
A shared invite does not work
Make sure the recipient already has a Mapystik account using that email address. Invites can expire or become unavailable if the original content is deleted.
Imported places look wrong
External data can be incomplete or outdated. Review names, addresses, categories, coordinates, and duplicates after import.
My trip route or time looks inaccurate
Route and timing information is for planning. Confirm travel times and availability with Google Maps, transport providers, venues, and booking services.
FAQ
Do I need an account?
Yes. Mapystik stores places and trips under your account so your workspace can load securely across sessions.
Can I use Mapystik offline?
Some cached data may remain visible, but core features such as authentication, sync, maps, search, sharing, and saving changes require internet access.
Can other users see my places?
Not by default. Other users can only access content you share with them, or content administrators can access for support and service management.
What is the difference between categories and tags?
Categories are broad buckets for places. Tags are more flexible labels that help filter across or inside categories.
Can I delete my data?
You can delete individual places and trips in the app. For full account or data deletion, contact the administrator.
Can I restore a backup?
Yes. Use Import, choose the backup option, and select a Mapystik JSON backup file. Review the imported data afterward.
